REACH REGULATION No. 2006/121/CE
The European Community’s REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals) regulation is designed to reduce the health risks associated with chemical substances. It requires businesses to register information on the safety of substances, and if necessary replace hazardous ones.
Pre-registration intends to help businesses identify and contact other companies that are planning to register the same substance, allowing them time to set up a Forum for the exchange of information.
Businesses will then have time up until 1st December 2010 for final registration and authorisation to market all substances produced or imported in quantities of at least 1,000 tonnes per year and up until 1st June 2018 for substances produced or imported in smaller amounts.
Pre-registration is required for all businesses based in the European Union that manufacture or import chemical substances amounting to at least one tonne per year.
Businesses that do not produce the substances, but acquire them to convert them into products, are required to play an active role in the production process, by surveying all products/manufacturers, starting with the most important ones, verifying that their suppliers are aware of the problem and providing evidence of how they know, manage and will manage the REACH regulation.
Metal Work falls within the latter category and has acted accordingly, completing the survey and obtaining the certificate in May 2009.
