2002 REPORT ON THE EMS

REVIEW OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Environmental Management System assessment for 2002.

INTRODUCTION

This analysis covers the whole of 2002. It is divided into sections, each corresponding to a specific aspect of the assessment. Dekra performed an inspection in December that produced an excellent result.

In terms of operation and routine activities, the Environment Management System has been implemented effectively.

All work and operations are performed with the aim of protecting the environment and preserving both energy and natural resources. We are well aware that natural resources are running out and therefore encourage efficient use of the exiting ones

Environmental performances are monitored continuously and analysed to promote improvements: each year we set ourselves new objectives and the management makes the necessary resources available.

STATE OF PROGRESS IN ACHIEVING THE 2002 OBJECTIVES

1) Creation of pages dedicated to environmental themes on the Metal Work website , which has been successfully completed with the publication of 4 pages dedicated to ISO 14001 in English and Italian.

2) Reduction of the amount of hazardous waste for disposal , particularly oily waste from the storage of used liquids, emulsions from the working process, and chipping dripping. To this end, a vacuum evaporation system has been installed to separate concentrated oily waste from the water that is recycled. This project was completed in 2003 instead of 2002 due to further work that had to be done in the silo area.

TRAINING

The training planned for 2002 has been completed.
Overall, 6 training courses were held on the emergency and evacuation plan and also on the handling of hazardous substances and turning residues, and waste management.

EXTERNAL REQUESTS

From a legal point of view, a modification was made in waste management following the decision 2000/532/ECC which introduced new waste coding and classification effective from 1st January 2002. This involved modifying our internal work instructions and operations.
No special environmental requests or proposals have been received from the community or any customers.

No visits by the surveillance bodies have been made.

SIGNIFICANCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

The environmental issues identified when implementing the EMS are all considered valid. It must be noted that the asbestos roof of the shed next to the office block was removed in 2001, which means that all of this hazardous substance has been removed.

ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE DATA AND INDICATORS

Number of penalties = 0;
Number of incidents = 0;
Exceeding of the limits in the total tests done: none;
Number of claims/reports from the parties involved = 0.

Some indicators are shown in the graphs attached below.

The four graphs below show the results of emission analysis over the years for:
perchloroethylene, sewage waters (the results are given as a percentage compared to the legal limits: suspended solids, mineral oils, total surfactants, copper, zinc, COD - chemical oxygen demand, an index of the organic content of the water sample) and oily mists (for each of the 4 emission points – graph not to scale).

In 2002, both legal limit and our internal limits were not reached or exceeded thanks to the corrective action taken following achievement of the internal limit for perchloroethylene in 2001.

Lastly are graphs showing the amount of waste produced over the last three years.

An increment in the amount of special hazardous waste is clearly visible following increased disposal of emulsions due to more frequent replacement in order to guarantee better quality of the work.

To avoid this inconvenience, it was decided to implement the improvement plan (identified with no. 2 for 2002) covering the installation of a vacuum evaporation system that separates concentrated oily waste from the water to be recycled. This plan was developed in 2003 instead of 2002 due to some unexpected work required on the plant.
