MANAGEMENT REVIEW
ENVIRONMENTAL/SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION:
This review considers the 2008 input data leading to considerations and improvement opportunities for 2009.
The 2nd inspection by Dekra took place on 17/07/08 and 06/02/09, and led to 9 recommendations.

ACHIEVEMENT OF AIMS: The following improvements were planned for 2008:

  • Installation of light timers in bathrooms, offices and production bays: the plan has been completed, although the energy saving only accounts for a tiny part of the company's overall consumption(estimated annual saving about 2,400 kWh).
  • Integration of the environmental management and safety system: completed with the creation of integrated forms under single management.
  • Increase in outward communication: plan completed with publication of a brochure and addition in the catalogue of pages dedicated to environmental and energy saving issues.
  • High-efficiency inverters and motors: as a result of their use, energy consumption has dropped sharply.
This far-reaching project will be continued in coming years. A whole series of minor and major improvements have also been launched to reduce electricity consumption in the production bays.

TRAINING AND COMMUNICATION 22 training sessions on environmental and safety issues were held in 2008.
Most of them were for operators and covered procedures or work instructions involving them. A course was also held for forklift truck operators. Two people were also taught to conduct internal audits of the environmenal management and safety systems.
Training sessions on the Emergency Plan were held as well.
An extract of the environmental review containing some environmental performance indicators was published on the company website. PARTICIPATION AND CONSULTATION

CHANGES IN THE LOCAL SITUATION AND LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

The Brescia provincial authority issued provision 1983 on 09/05/08 on "Updating of atmospheric emission permits due to substantial modifications to an existing plant" (addition of the point of emission of E10 dust and oil mist).
SAFETY: Legislative decree no. 81/08 - "Consolidated act on health and safety in the workplace" issued in April 2008, and Metal Work is adapting its documentation and operations accordingly.

SIGNIFICANCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS
The environmental aspects initially identified and upgraded in 2003 are still considered valid. Following the installation of a tumbling system, this process Following the installation of a tumbling system, this process was added to the list of environmental aspects. Since the only emission from this process is waste 12 01 14, the environmental aspects have been recorded among significant ones (22) due to legal requirement (industrial waste management).
Details are shown in the "Register of significant environmental aspects".
A new point of atmospheric emission (E 10 dust and oil mist) went into operation in June 2008 but this does not entail the addition of environmental aspects, since the emission involves substances already present at the plant.

ADEQUACY OF THE POLICY
A new Policy was issued on 22/04/08 due to the system integration process. It combines the commitments that the Management had previously expressed in two separate policies.

2009 are consistent with the contents of the new Policy.
