2004 REPORT ON THE EMS
Review on the anvironmental management system
INTRODUCTION
This report is based on the figures for 2004. The analysis has led us to make certain considerations and propose improvements for 2005.
Dekra s recertification visits took place on July 7th and 3rd December 2004 and the results were positive. The company s Environmental Management System (EMS) is implemented efficiently in terms of operations, routine activities and more managerial” improvement efforts.
ACHIEVEMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLANNING TARGETS
For 2004, the company set itself the task of implementing two projects:
- Use of Eco-label oils and lubricants: The plan was to replace some of the products used with equivalent substances that are less hazardous for the environment. This target, however, has not yet been reached due to the lack of information and sensitization of manufacturers and distributors.
- On-line hazardous substance Safety Data sheets: The aim was to provide all the departments with Safety Data sheets for all the chemical substances, using a database in the internal e-mail system.
The project was implemented successfully and is being used more frequently by the operators.
- Ecological packaging for ONE: The aim was to provide this highly-innovative product with equally-innovative packaging made of fully recyclable material to convey an environmentally-friendly message. The plan was implemented. The ONE unit is now packaged in a plain cardboard box with no writing on it (so no bleaching substances for the paper, no ink and no plastic). With its new look, the box conveys a clear message of positive thinking and recycling.
TRAINING AND COMMUNICATION
Numerous environmental training sessions were held in 2004. Most of them involved providing operators with instructions covering their specific tasks. One meeting was called following modification to the environmental equipment maintenance instructions. Another meeting was the result of the introduction of a new CER code. There was also a training session on the Emergency and Evacuation Plan for all the operators and the heads of department.
EXTERNAL REQUESTS
Under Ministerial Decree no. 44 of 16th January 2004, it is necessary to draw up a technical report on the current state of our plants emitting volatile organic substances. The report must be sent to the authorities by the end of March 2005 and the company must comply by the end of October 2007.
No particular requests or demands were received from the community or from our customers.
No visits were made by the controlling bodies.
The environmental aspects initially identified and upgrade in 2003 are still considered valid.
The Environmental Policy, which was modified in June 2003, is still considered appropriate.
ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE DATA AND INDICATORS
All the data and indicators of this section refer to the whole of 2004.
Number of violations = 0
Number of accidents = 0
Number of analyses exceeding the limits = 0
Number of claims/complaints from the parties involved = 0
Some indicators are shown in the graphs.
The following four graphs show the trend of the emissions analysis results: for perchloroethylene, waste waters (the results of the analyses are plotted as a percentage of the legal limits for suspended solids, mineral oils, total surfactants, copper, zinc and chemical oxygen demand (COD), an index of the organic content of the water sample), and oily mists (for each of the four points of emission – graph not in scale).
